Job Description:

As our Mining Supervisor of your responsibilities will include but not limited to:

  • Consistently apply Safety and health principles in all team interactions and take personal responsibility for the safety of self and others to ensure zero harm and elimination of fatalities.
  • Act as a role model and reinforce a workplace culture where safety and health for the site are paramount.
  • Create a safe space for the team to identify and address unsafe behaviours without facing negative consequences.
  •  specific risks within the working area and adhere to discipline-specific plans/systems to avoid these risks.
  • Use operational risk management systems.
  • Report on critical control performance within the team.
  • Embed critical controls into the daily work practices of the team.
  • Identify risks and provide feedback for updating site WRACs and Bow Ties.
  • Implement Safety and Health systems within the work area.
  • Assess contractors ‘fitness for duty’ and take any subsequent necessary action.
  • Engage in physical safety checks, interventions, and coaching.
  • Collect data for safety reports and gather KPIs based on available data.
  • Report contractor deficiencies and implement plans to address deficiencies.
  • Conduct continual safety audits to ensure all safety requirements are met.
  • Participate in safety deviation closeouts.
  • Active participation in SLAMs, HPHs, relevant Risk Assessments and close-out of Safety Actions.
  • Ensure compliance with daily/weekly operational plans.
  • Plan and deliver the weekly schedule, considering the requirements for the upcoming shifts.
  • Communicate with other operational supervisors during the shift to monitor conditions and escalate unforeseen deviations from the plan/schedule.
  • Provide inputs into developing and implementing a regular production plan, maintenance schedule, and resource allocation to minimise delays.
  • Conduct over-inspections to address potential issues and ensure preparedness for unforeseen circumstances.
  • Assist in creating contingency plans for unforeseen failures or delays.
  • Consult with Section Engineers, providing input into all discipline-related designs and schedules to ensure they remain relevant to actual conditions and meet desired outputs.
  • Regularly consult with other operational supervisors to monitor current operating conditions and determine any changes that may be required to the plan.
  • Deliver the shift plan within the context of the weekly plan and the month’s requirements, always considering what is needed to set up oncoming shifts for success.
  • Develop effective traffic management plans that minimise equipment interactions and maintain the integrity of drilled holes.
  • Prioritize tasks, assign team members, continually monitor and assess performance to accomplish tasks and outputs, and build relevant follow-up action plans to bridge gaps.
  • Take appropriate action to respond to ‘out-of-norm’ conditions in Blockprep and highwall, Blasting, Drilling, Pit Services, Loading, Hauling, Projects, and construction.
  • Mitigate unforeseen circumstances where possible and escalate issues that may prevent the delivery of the plan.
  • Monitor ‘compliance to design’ metrics to drive a high-performance team culture.
  • Ensure work areas are set up and maintained to required standards and all relevant safety controls are in place and effective.
  • Engage in comprehensive shift handovers with incoming and outgoing peer Supervisors, actively exchanging pertinent information crucial for daily plans, thereby supporting the seamless continuity of safe and responsible production across all shifts.
  • Manage day-to-day administrative activities to guarantee smooth operational flow.
  • Secure continuous coverage for the shift by introducing and inducting new hires, reviewing and approving holiday requests, completing and authorising timesheets for payroll purposes, and effectively managing planned leave. Collaborate with site Contractor Management when applicable to ensure alignment.
  • Complete all required shift reports and documentation on schedule, ensuring high-quality data capture.
  • Monitor and assess performance regarding task accomplishment, outputs, and handovers.
  • Support effective cost management across shifts, focusing on reducing system waste.
  • Support the relevant mining reconciliation process and drive performance and compliance.
  • Ensure critical data is collected accurately and on time to support reconciliation requirements.
  • Attend weekly reconciliation meetings and help develop corrective actions to aid recovery and drive improvements.
  • Proactively identify and flag Mining-specific challenges and opportunities that new technology could address.
  • Contribute to cost saving within own section.
  • Maintain budget accuracy within set limits.
  • Support effective cost management by approving required tools and equipment to the level of financial authority, developing an awareness of costs within the team, and focusing on reducing all types of waste.
  • Lead pre-shift meetings clearly and concisely, ensuring the effective communication of all relevant information to the team.
  • Invest significant face-to-face time with team members to observe performance and behaviours, providing improvement coaching and guidance.
  • Support a purpose-led culture based on company values, inclusivity, and diversity.
  • Actively engage in team processes and set clear expectations.
  • Ensure participation in required training and provide coaching and feedback.
  • Resolve issues and escalate as required.
  • Adhere to external local compliance requirements as a minimum level of site performance.
  • Adhere to Anglo American compliance requirements relevant to the mining process.

This role is in Mining (MIN) department on a band 7 (C4) level reporting to the Section Manager

Qualifications:

  • Grade 12/ N3 Certificate
  • Diploma or equivalent qualification in Mining (Advantageous)
  • SA Drivers Licence (Code B)
  • Competency A
  • DMRE approved Blasting Certificate
  • A2 Safety Training and Legal Liability (Advantageous)
  • 5 years of relevant experience in an operational mining environment.

Technical Skills

  • 3-5 Years’ mining production experience.
  • Knowledge of operational processes within the scope of the role.
  • Domain-specific knowledge of relevant mining processes, operating procedures, and equipment capability.
  • Risk management techniques and critical controls.
  • Leadership tools for implementing a culture of purpose-led high-performance and change.
  • Safety, health and environment, legislative, statutory, and regulatory requirements.
